On Ya Bike
This project includes focused mechanic or riding workshops in a private setting for adults. These workshops are aimed at private groups (friends/community group) or staff groups (youth workers/teachers). On Ya Bike workshops are about learning basic information about bicycles and how to fix or ride them. This project has a focus on training and upskilling. Each session, two facilitators (Duane & Charlotte) support the group to learn about the different bicycle parts and how they work, how to use tools or ride bicycles correctly and provide them with introductory knowledge on how to maintain/ride their own bicycle/s. Alternatively participants can decide what they’d like to learn about, in the case they have something specific in mind. Participants have the option to bring their own bicycle/fleet to work on or be provided with one (from C&GP) that they can use for the purpose of the workshop. Workshops can be a once off or over a duration of weeks/months.
On Ya Bike workshops can focus on many different skills and can be tailored to participants needs and skill levels.
Generally, during On Ya Bike mechanic sessions, various introductory skills are taught, including (but not limited to) learning how to:
change a tube and employ triple layered protection (new tube, old tube & sealant) to ensure the bicycle goes the distance
replace or repair other small parts (seat, grips, bells, cranks, pedals, cables, derailleurs, bottom brackets, chains, etc.)
tune the gears and brakes and repair any issues (if applicable and time allows)
pull apart, paint and rebuild a bicycle (if applicable and time allows)
give the bicycle a safety check and test ride the bicycle safely
work on a bicycle as a group and do so safely
know what each tool is used for and how to use it correctly
During the riding sessions, various skills are taught, including (but not limited to) learning how to:
wear and fit a helmet safely
set up and choose a bicycle to suit participant size
test ride the bicycle, ensuring it is safe to ride & use
ride safely as a group
ride safely on dirt/paved paths and/or green MTB trails
if appropriate - how to learn more advanced skills (eg. tricks, specific MTB skills etc)
On Ya Bike can also support participants to go on overnight bicycle camps or long-distance off-road bicycle rides.
