CRANK IT!
This project includes intensive bicycle mechanic workshops delivered in remote Indigenous communities or public spaces. Often the workshops are offered in collaboration with another service (eg. youth program, community group). CRANK IT! is aimed at young people aged 12-25, however caters to engage all community members. Workshops include recycling and repairing used bicycles and learning basic skills of how to fix and maintain a bicycle. Each session, two facilitators (Duane & Charlotte) support participants to work on bicycles, providing them with a safe space for the duration of the session. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bicycles & second hand parts - whether that be from their yard, the rubbish dump or discarded elsewhere - it doesn’t matter. C&GP also come equipped with new and used parts and donated bicycles, ensuring to recycle and get as as many bicycles running, as possible.
During CRANK IT! mechanic sessions, various introductory skills are taught, including how to:
● change a tube and employ triple layered protection (new tube, old tube & sealant) to ensure the bicycle goes the distance
● replace or repair other small parts, if applicable (seat, grips, bells, cranks, pedals, cables, derailleurs, bottom brackets, chains, etc.)
● tune the gears and brakes and repair any issues, if applicable
● give the bicycle a safety check and test ride the bicycle safely
● work on a bicycle as a group and do so safely
● know what each tool is used for and how to use it correctly
CRANK IT! has been delivered with MacDonnell Regional Council MacYouth, NT Health, Arrente Community Boxing Academy, Julalikari Council Aboriginal Corporation and Central Australian Aboriginal Congress.
